Surviving Your Serengeti: Who are you?

“Who am I?”

That’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves at least once, and at times, still struggle to answer. For entrepreneurs, being clear about who we are, what our strengths are, and what skills we need to hone, will have a tremendous impact on our relationships and results. For the younger generation, the answer can set them on the right path.

“You are the Crocodile.”

This was the result of a quiz called What Animal Am I? based on Stefan Swanepoel’s best-selling book, Surviving Your Serengeti: 7 Skills to Master Business and Life.

The enterprising crocodile

(Yes, that's me, according to the quiz.)

When social media becomes unsociable

Are you making a mistake?

Are you making a mistake?

In a previous post, I wrote about why social media rocks. This time, I’d like to highlight what happens when people misuse technology in network marketing.

Boring content, bored customers

Social media tools should be used to connect and engage with people, not as a means to bombard them with marketing news on products and services.

For example, Facebook is a good way to make yourself known, liked and trusted. But it’s not a good place to boast about your products or business ability. Make your content useful and relevant to your target audience.

Why social media rocks!

Popular social media tools Social media is not just a necessity — it has become such an integral part of my life, that it’s now one of my favourite ways to interact. Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and this blog are great for engaging with fellow networkers, sharing news and getting feedback.

The amazing thing is that it’s all real-time – something lacking in traditional media. You can’t get immediate feedback through a newspaper or TV, can you?

At the Independent Entrepreneurs Cyber Convention 2011 in Kuala Lumpur, I spoke about how social media can be very effective for business. When done right, it can help network marketers build stronger relationships with customers, and grow their network.

Go BAD to be MAD

As the year draws to a close, I look back on how far we’ve come, and I’m grateful for everything with which God has blessed me.

Then I think about how much further we can go, as network marketers, as family members, and as part of society.

We often speak about being MAD or “making a difference”, whether at home, at the workplace, or in your community. Making a difference can be an extremely enriching experience, not only for the person you’re helping, but also for yourself. But before you can make a real difference, you first need to be the difference. As Gandhi put it so well, “Be the change you want to see in the world”.

A great way to give advice

How to give constructive advice

Have you been in a situation where you wanted to help someone, but weren’t sure how to do it without offending them?

Giving feedback can be tricky – if it comes across as negative criticism, there’s a chance the person may be offended and shut you out completely.

In that sense, how you deliver your message can have a bigger impact than the message itself.

So, what do you do? First, recognise the efforts of the person you want to help: “I noticed that you did X, Y and Z to solve the problem, and it worked very well.”
